The BBC has decided to cancel two special Christmas episodes of MasterChef following allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior against presenter Gregg Wallace. However, the remaining episodes of MasterChef: The Professionals, already filmed, will air as scheduled to conclude the competition.
A BBC spokesperson confirmed, “The festive specials are distinct from the main series, and given the current situation, we’ve chosen not to broadcast them.” Despite this, the network emphasized the importance of the ongoing professional competition, calling it a “life-changing opportunity” for contestants competing for the prestigious MasterChef trophy.
Allegations Against Gregg Wallace
Gregg Wallace, a long-time MasterChef presenter, is facing serious accusations from over a dozen individuals spanning a 17-year period. He has denied making inappropriate remarks, calling the allegations baseless.
The production company behind MasterChef, whose format airs in over 50 countries, is conducting an investigation, with Wallace stepping down from his presenting duties during the inquiry. Wallace further stirred controversy by dismissing the allegations as being made by “a handful of middle-class women of a certain age,” a comment for which he later apologized, acknowledging the offense caused.
BBC Under Scrutiny
The scandal has put the BBC under intense scrutiny, prompting UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy to engage with BBC leadership to ensure that proper mechanisms are in place for handling complaints.
This is not the first controversy to shake the broadcaster. Earlier this year, Strictly Come Dancing faced allegations of bullying, and former BBC anchor Huw Edwards pleaded guilty to creating indecent images of children, narrowly avoiding jail, further tarnishing the BBC’s reputation.
