The much-anticipated sequel to the 1996 classic, Twisters, is taking the global box office by storm, drawing significant attention in key international markets, particularly Korea.
Twisters brings together a talented cast, led by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, delivering a powerful mix of action and drama that showcases the latest in storm-chasing technology. This thrilling sequel has proven to be a hit with audiences, both in theaters and on PVOD, earning its place as a must-see blockbuster.
Over the recent weekend, Twisters raked in an estimated $4.7 million across 71 overseas markets, marking an impressive -37% drop in holdover territories. This success has pushed the film’s international gross to a solid $95 million, contributing to a global cumulative total of $333.4 million as of Sunday. A standout performance was seen in Korea, where Twisters opened with an estimated Won 2.9 billion ($2.1 million) across 874 screens. This remarkable debut aligns with the box office performances of major blockbusters like Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
In Korea, Twisters outshined several big releases, surpassing Godzilla: King of the Monsters by 13%, The Fall Guy by 92%, Everest by 104%, Meg 2: The Trench by 184%, and Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire by a staggering 738%.
The Plot of ‘Twisters’
Twisters follows a new generation of storm chasers, led by Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Tyler Owens (Glen Powell). The film delves into their high-risk mission to understand and predict increasingly destructive tornadoes, utilizing advanced technology and sheer bravery. As these natural disasters grow more ferocious, the personal stakes for the storm chasers intensify, forcing them to face not only nature’s fury but also their own internal conflicts and relationships. Like its predecessor, Twisters combines intense action with character-driven drama, while introducing new elements that reflect modern advancements in meteorology and the evolving challenges of storm chasing.
Critics have praised the film, with Collider’s Jeff Ewing highlighting the standout performances of the lead actors and the inspired direction by Lee Isaac Chung. He noted, “As a whole, Twisters works. Once again, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell prove they can anchor a thrilling tale, grounding a film that has scale and high stakes. Lee Isaac Chung’s direction is inspired, and the script is well-paced, intelligent, and full of memorable moments. The film successfully connects with the original while introducing fresh themes. However, it does struggle to balance certain plot lines, particularly regarding one key character, and a few supporting roles could have been better utilized. Despite these minor flaws, Twisters is a thrilling crowd-pleaser that takes the disaster genre in exciting, novel directions and is a brilliant showcase of talent across the board.”
Twisters is currently playing in theaters and is also available on PVOD.
